Behind Every Great Service: Honouring the Women in Hospitality

There is a definite shift in the food world: the heat, the hustle, and the vibrant pulse of an industry evolving. Behind that are the women in hospitality, the unsung heroes keeping South Africa fed. They bring a natural grace to high-pressure spaces, turning chaos into teamwork and making every shift brighter.

This Women’s Month, Frey’s is honouring the hands that hold it all together: from the head chefs balancing fire and flair to the supply managers ensuring the trucks arrive on time. Women are creating a warmer, stronger food culture that sets a higher standard across South Africa.

The woman’s hand in connection

There is a reason why children resort to, “I’m telling mom,” each time they are troubled. They know she has a clever solution for every unique situation they find themselves in. The same applies in hospitality; women who navigate spaces not originally built for them develop an adaptive problem-solving mindset. They swap short-term negotiation wins for empathetic, creative solutions and build long-term relationships that keep operations running effortlessly.

A plate of food presented to a diner is only as good as the journey it took to get there. The people producing the food have to care just as much as the people plating it. That is why, with over 600 women at Frey’s, we can proudly say that they are the backbone of our growth and why our business has stood the test of time. They have been part of our family from the start, building, supporting, and guiding us to where we are today.

When food safety is personal

In an industry where one mishap can completely shatter a business, food safety is non-negotiable. A bad batch of products or one missed check during service can easily undo a reputation built over years. Women in hospitality treat quality assurance with a level of care that serves as a promise to the person eating at the table.

For years, they have been the guardians of our food systems: writing safety rules, conducting food health research, and teaching the public on proper handling. It is that attention to detail that makes recipes perform consistently. Their involvement ensures that ingredients are at their freshest; food waste and rejected deliveries are significantly reduced; and stock levels and food costs are kept under control.

Lifting as they climb

Beyond day-to-day operations, women in hospitality are actively changing workplace culture. They are holding the door open for younger women entering commercial kitchens, butcheries, and logistics – fields where female voices were once rare. They are not afraid to share their knowledge, skill and wealth of experience to guarantee food that truly honours the plate.

Through hands-on mentorship, open communication, and practical support, they show that high-pressure environments do not require aggressive tactics to achieve excellence. They bake in steady progress to build a more inclusive, supportive industry for the future women in hospitality.

A collaborative future

Great food experiences are never built in isolation. They need an entire network of people who take pride in their work. At Frey’s, we recognise that we all ultimately serve the same critic: the customer. And our core commitment to the culinary community is simple: to give foodservice teams complete confidence in their ingredients long before the first order comes in.

We want to send a huge thank you to the production teams, chefs, procurement managers, quality inspectors, logistics teams, and our own women team members. You raise the bar every day, and the South African food industry is stronger because of you.
